1. Art forgery is when people illegally create and sell works of art that are copies of another artist. Read this text and write some ideas you can use in an argument about forgery.

Answer: The main problem is plagiarism. I’m absolutely convinced that the people who forge art are not creative themselves, so they have to steal the ideas and work of others

2. Now that you know what forgery is, read the story, “Where Did It Begin? The Origins of Piracy”, in your Reader’s Book (pages 117 to 129).

5. Work in groups. People in debates must know vocabulary and words to present their arguments.


a. To make something that is similar to something else: copying

b. Something that is not allowed by law: illegal

c. To make and sell something illegally: bootlegging

d. The act of breaking a rule or law: infringement

e. To make something look exactly like something else to trick people: counterfeiting

6. Work in pairs. Read the sentences and circle if you Agree (A) or Disagree (D). Write your opinion on the line provided.

a. The government analyzes good tactics to fight piracy in my country. My opinion: D, I disagree because there is a lot of piracy on the streets and nothing is done about it

b. Downloading music from the internet without paying for it is not piracy. My opinion: D, I disagree because that music belongs to someone, someone created the lyrics, someone produced that music, so it is piracy if you don’t pay to listen to that music, unless it is an online platform that has agreements with the owners of that music

7. Work in pairs. Take turns to answer these questions. You should and give your statements and opinions based on your arguments.

a. What do you think about piracy? I think piracy is wrong

b. Have you ever bought bootleg products? No, I haven’t

c. What are the most common counterfeit products in your country? Clothing items might be the most common counterfeit products

d. What can authorities do to stop piracy? They should give more job opportunities for the people who make a living of counterfeiting products

8. When you are in the middle of a debate, you might miss out on some information form the arguments. The expressions in the box can be used to ask for clarification and repetition.

9. In groups, collect some ideas to prepare a debate based on what you learned in this lesson.
